How is IronFjord different from a traditional financial advisor?

James Mayo

I built IronFjord specifically for people approaching or living in retirement. Rather than focusing primarily on investments, I bring together retirement income planning, proactive tax planning, in-house investment management, and comprehensive financial planning. I also charge one transparent flat fee rather than a percentage of your investments. That means my compensation doesn't increase simply because your portfolio grows. My goal is to handle the moving parts of retirement in one place, so you have a clear plan, coordinated advice, and someone helping you navigate the decisions along the way.

Why do you charge a flat fee instead of a percentage of assets?

James Mayo

I believe the work involved in managing your financial life shouldn't necessarily cost more simply because you've accumulated more investments. Many traditional advisors charge around 1% of assets annually. On a $2 million portfolio, that's $20,000 per year, and the fee increases as your portfolio grows. At IronFjord, I charge a predictable flat fee that covers ongoing financial planning, retirement income planning, proactive tax planning, and investment management. There are no separate investment management charges, and you know what you're paying regardless of what happens in the markets.

How do you help clients turn their savings into a reliable retirement paycheck?

James Mayo

One of the biggest changes in retirement is going from saving money every month to drawing from the savings you've spent decades building. I help clients make that transition by creating a retirement income plan designed to provide a consistent, predictable paycheck, much like the salary they're accustomed to receiving. That includes determining how much you can comfortably spend, coordinating Social Security and pensions, planning for larger expenses, and deciding which investment accounts to draw from each year. The goal isn't simply to make your money last. It's to give you the confidence to actually enjoy the wealth you've worked so hard to accumulate.

How is your approach to tax planning different?

James Mayo

Tax planning isn't something I look at once a year. It's woven into virtually every financial decision I make. I prepare tax projections, evaluate Roth conversions, coordinate withdrawals across different account types, manage investments with tax efficiency in mind, and consider how today's decisions may affect your taxes years into the future. I'm also an IRS Enrolled Agent (EA), so tax expertise is part of the service rather than something I simply outsource. Retirement creates unique opportunities to manage lifetime taxes, particularly in the years between stopping work and beginning required minimum distributions. I actively look for those opportunities throughout our ongoing relationship.

Do you manage investments directly, or outsource them?

James Mayo

I manage my clients' investments directly rather than outsourcing portfolio management to a third-party firm or relying on expensive, prepackaged investment solutions. My investment philosophy is deliberately straightforward: broadly diversified, low-cost index funds, with careful attention to taxes, risk, and how your investments support your retirement income plan. I'm a CFA charterholder, and investment management is included in my flat fee. I believe investments should serve your financial plan, not the other way around. That means your portfolio, retirement withdrawals, and tax strategy are all managed together rather than treated as separate pieces.

What qualifications do you bring to retirement planning?

James Mayo

Retirement planning involves much more than choosing investments. It requires a thorough understanding of retirement income, taxation, financial planning, and how all these decisions interact. I hold four professional credentials covering these disciplines: • CFA charterholder: Investment analysis and portfolio management. • CFP® professional: Comprehensive financial planning. • Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®): Retirement income strategies and the financial decisions surrounding retirement. • IRS Enrolled Agent (EA): Federal taxation and tax planning. This combination allows me to bring several areas of specialized expertise together under one roof, rather than relying on separate professionals for every aspect of your retirement plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

We specialize in helping people approaching or living in retirement, typically age 55+ with $1 million or more in investable assets. Our clients have worked hard to build their wealth and now want help turning their savings into reliable retirement income, navigating important financial decisions, and enjoying retirement without having to manage every detail themselves.

Yes. IronFjord is an independent, fee-only fiduciary firm, which means we're legally obligated to act in our clients' best interests. We don't earn commissions from selling investments or insurance products, and we don't receive compensation for recommending particular financial products. Our advice is focused on what's appropriate for your circumstances, not on selling you something.

We charge one transparent annual flat fee rather than a percentage of your investments. That includes retirement income planning, proactive tax planning, comprehensive financial planning, and in-house investment management. Our fees don't automatically increase as your portfolio grows, and we don't charge additional investment management fees. It's straightforward, predictable pricing with no commissions or hidden layers of advisory fees.

Absolutely. This is one of our specialties. We build personalized retirement income plans designed to turn your savings into a consistent, predictable paycheck, much like the salary you received while working. We help determine how much you can comfortably spend, which accounts to draw from, and how to adjust your income as circumstances change. The goal is to help you enjoy retirement with confidence rather than constantly worrying about your investments.

Tax planning is woven into virtually everything we do. We prepare tax projections, evaluate Roth conversions, coordinate retirement withdrawals, and manage investments with tax efficiency in mind. We also consider how decisions today may affect future taxes, Medicare premiums, and required minimum distributions. While nobody can predict future tax laws or guarantee tax savings, we use the information available to make thoughtful, tax-aware decisions. Our founder is an IRS Enrolled Agent (EA), bringing formal tax expertise directly into the planning process.

Yes. These are some of the most important decisions you'll make around retirement. We help evaluate Social Security claiming strategies, compare pension options, navigate Medicare decisions, and coordinate everything with your investments, income needs, and tax situation. Rather than looking at each decision separately, we consider how they fit together within your broader retirement plan.

Yes. We manage investments in-house using low-cost, broadly diversified index funds, with a strong focus on tax efficiency. But our work goes well beyond investments. We also review estate plans, beneficiary designations, insurance coverage, charitable giving, and other financial considerations to make sure nothing important gets overlooked. Everything is coordinated under one roof and included in our flat fee.

IronFjord combines retirement specialization, comprehensive expertise, fiduciary advice, and transparent flat-fee pricing. Our founder, James Mayo, is a CFA charterholder, CFP® professional, Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®), and IRS Enrolled Agent (EA). This combination brings investment management, retirement income planning, tax expertise, and comprehensive financial planning together under one roof. We also intentionally limit the number of households we serve, so clients receive personalized attention and work directly with James rather than being passed between departments or advisors.
